In our excursion to Mavrovo, we will visit our biggest national park. A day trip packed with beautiful nature and culture.
We depart from Ohrid, and head towards Debar. Driving along the Drin river, you will have beautiful view all the way. We will stop several times, so you can take some pictures of the stunning environment. Debar is an always lively and very busy place. Known for its huge gypsum reserves and multi-ethnicity. We will walk thought the town, and you will learn how other minorities in Macedonia live. Of course, we will have a nice cup of coffee.
Saint Jovan Bigorski monastery
After Saint Naum in Ohrid, this is the most visited religious place in Macedonia. The original monastery was built in 1020 and is very famous because of its stunning iconostasis. No matter if you are religious or not, the wood carved iconostasis and the architecture of the monastery are true masterpieces. A very mystical place, high in the mountains.
After we had our traditional Macedonian meal in the restaurant, we will go to the Duf waterfall. A highlight of our excursion Mavrovo. Personally, I enjoy walking the path to the waterfall as much as the waterfall itself. The surrounding nature, the millions of years old rock formations, the water flowing in the small river, everything not manmade. It looks like a perfect movie set, except that we will experience it for real.
