Excursion Mavrovo
In our excursion to Mavrovo, we will visit the village of Gari, the Duf Waterfall, and the Saint Jovan Bigorski Monastery in our largest national park. It will be a day trip packed with beautiful nature and culture.
Debar
We depart from Ohrid and head towards Debar. Driving along the Drin River, you’ll enjoy beautiful views all the way. We’ll stop at a dam and a viewpoint so you can take pictures of the stunning surroundings. Debar is always lively and very busy, known for its huge gypsum reserves and diverse multi-ethnic population. We’ll walk through the town, and you’ll see how other minorities in Macedonia live. Of course, we’ll enjoy a nice cup of coffee — and cake!
Gari
Next, we will visit the authentic village of Gari. The village is located in a remote area surrounded by forest, with beautiful streams flowing through it. We will walk around so you can see the village’s unique building style. After that, we will sit down at a family restaurant to enjoy a delicious meal.
Saint Jovan Bigorski monastery
After enjoying our traditional Macedonian meal at the restaurant, we will visit the Saint Jovan Bigorski Monastery. After Saint Naum in Ohrid, it is the most visited religious site in Macedonia. The original monastery was built in 1020 and is famous for its stunning iconostasis. Whether you are religious or not, the intricately carved wooden iconostasis and the monastery’s architecture are true masterpieces. It is a very mystical place, high up in the mountains.
Duf waterfall
We will finish the day with a visit to the Duf Waterfall, a highlight of our Mavrovo excursion. Personally, I enjoy walking the path to the waterfall as much as the waterfall itself. The surrounding nature, the millions-of-years-old rock formations, and the water flowing through the small river—everything is untouched by man. It looks like a perfect movie set, except that we get to experience it for real.
With Debar, Gari, the Saint Jovan Bigorski Monastery, and the Duf Waterfall, the excursion to Mavrovo is packed with diversity. It’s a great trip for both young and old. Enjoy your day full of nature and culture!
